Description
Taunton School is a large Gothic building set within its own grounds, constructed between 1867 and 1870. The main building was designed by Joseph James of London, while the chapel was designed by Sir Frank Wills during the same period. The structure features a long three-storey range facing south, with a tall central tower above the entrance. On either side, there are single-storey gabled ranges that project forward. The walls are made of rubble with ashlar dressings, and the roofs are covered with slate and topped with cresting.
The square central tower has a pyramidal roof with a weathervane, and gablets rise above the second-storey windows into the roof. Most windows are two-light with plain mullions and transoms. The tower features a canted bay that extends through two storeys above the entrance, with these lights having traceried heads. The pointed entrance is set forward from the front and includes a moulded archway and double wooden doors. To the right on the ground floor, there is a bow window with a crenellated parapet. The gabled ranges at both ends of the front are supported by buttresses with setoffs and large traceried windows.
Taunton School and Fairwater form a group.
