Description

A group of three cottages, likely dating from the 16th or 17th century, with alterations in the 18th century and later. The cottages are constructed of ham stone, with the north wing featuring ashlar facing below and rubble above, while the south crosswing is of rubble construction. They have thatched roofs with gables and brick chimney stacks. The west elevation has a T-shaped plan and five bays. The windows are mostly small-pane casement windows, with horizontal bars in the fifth bay and French doors in the lower bays one and two. A part-glazed door is under a hood in the angle formed by the crosswing to the right of bay five. A mounting block consisting of four steps is located against the west gable of the crosswing. The south side has four bays of casement windows, with a door set in a glazed porch to the lower bay one. The interior, though not inspected, is reported to include a wide fireplace, a circular stair, and chamfered crossbeams with step and runout stops in the west end of the crosswing, although the crosswing has been significantly modified. A low stone wall, approximately 9 metres from the house and returning at the southwest corner, supports arrowhead railings with urn-capped standards and pairs of gates located opposite bay two of Rose Cottage and near the southwest corner. These contribute to the setting of the houses. The group is included for their group value with the Church of St. John the Evangelist and All Saints, and the cottage located 50 metres east of the church, which is immediately north of Rose Cottage.
