Description
The war memorial in Severalls Park Avenue, Crewkerne, was unveiled in June 1922 to honor the 127 local men who died in the First World War. It was designed by Hubert Worthington, with the figure carved by F Worth.
The memorial is made of Cornish granite and stands on two deep octagonal steps. The upper step features the inscription: "TO THE 127 MEN OF CREWKERNE / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 / 1918." The pedestal is composed of large stone blocks that resemble a dolmen, a type of megalithic tomb. Atop this pedestal is a horizontal triangular capstone that supports a carved granite figure of a standing infantryman, which is approximately 1.35 meters tall.
The memorial's design was inspired by the war memorial in Lelant, Cornwall, but instead of a wheel-head cross, it is topped with the figure of a soldier. The figure was carved by F Wood, who had previously worked at the Penzance School of Art and was responsible for the Lelant memorial. Worthington's design also included the planting of 127 trees in Severalls Park to commemorate the fallen men.
This memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of the First World War on the local community and is notable for its unique design and historical significance.
