Description
The Old Rectory is a former rectory, now divided into two houses, with this description referring to the south half. It dates back to around 1500 and has undergone two reshaping phases in the 19th century. The building is constructed from local lias stone, with some cut and squared sections, and features Ham stone dressings. There is also some brickwork beneath the rendering. The roof is made of Welsh slate and is set between coped gables, with stone chimney stacks.
The south entrance elevation is two storeys high with attics and consists of five bays, featuring double gables of two bays each linked by a flat-coped centre. The windows are late 19th-century sashes, each with pairs of 4-centre arched head lights beneath labels. The upper bay three has a 2-light 15th-century flat-headed window with a cinquefoil ogee head light and quatrefoil spandrels, similar to those found at Muchelney Abbey. Below this window is a 4-centre arch leading to an open porch, which contains a moulded cambered arched doorway with a 19th-century door. Above the door is a small stone shield depicting a rampant lion holding a garland.
The west elevation has been completely reshaped in the late 19th century and consists of three bays. A small portion of the north elevation retains 16th-century style 2-light mullioned windows, although all but one are now blocked, and the roof has been raised over this section. The interior of the house has a predominantly Regency character and has not been altered as much as the exterior. This house represents half of the Rectory, which was first mentioned in 1554 as being "in decay," and may indicate a rebuilding of the kitchen area. It is attached to the north side of Lion House.
