Description

The Canal Bridge, located at NGR ST 1665 2315, is a road bridge over the remains of the Grand Western Canal. It was constructed between 1831 and 1838 by James Green, who was the engineer for the Canal Company. The bridge is made of limestone that is dressed and squared, featuring dressed voussoirs and a string band, as well as heavy rounded edge coping. It has a single flat segmental arch supported by four cast iron ribs, which bear cast iron plates that serve as centring for the road bed. The abutments are straight. This bridge is an early and rare example of a canal bridge built with cast iron. The canal itself was closed in 1867.
