Description
The Manor House, now part of the Downside Abbey estate, is a manor house dating from the 17th century, with alterations from the 18th and 20th centuries. It features coursed rubble construction, flush dressed quoins, a moulded stone eaves cornice, coped verges, and a pantile roof with rubble stacks topped with caps. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has five bays. The first floor includes two and three-light moulded stone-mullioned windows with stopped labels, while the ground floor has sash windows with glazing bars set in moulded architraves. The central door opening, which has a similar architrave surround, was renewed in the late 20th century and features a triangular pediment on brackets above a 20th-century panelled door. To the left, there is a single bay outshut that is of lower height. The forecourt wall is made of rubble with a dressed stone coping and includes central polygonal ashlar gate piers and a wrought-iron gate.
