Description
Dair's Barton is a cottage dating back to the 16th century. It was refenestrated in the 19th century and restored around 1945. The construction is roughcast over rubble, with a half-hipped thatched roof. A 20th-century brick chimney rises from the north gable end, while a stone chimney is on the south gable end. The building may have originally been an open hall, later divided into a two-cell layout with a small addition set behind the south stack and another addition projecting outwards. It is two storeys high with two bays. The first floor has 19th-century three-light casement windows, while the ground floor has 20th-century metal casements flanking a 19th-century plank door. Gable ends are unlit. The rear elevation includes a 3-light dormer window inserted to light a staircase, an eyebrow dormer above a 20th-century glazed door, and a single-storey outshot addition to the right. Inside, a chamfered lintel is visible above the original fireplace in the small annexe. A timber-framed partition divides the heated room from the originally unheated room, and there are three pairs of jointed cruck trusses of varying types. The roof has always been half-hipped, though the original nature of the roof space remains uncertain.
