Description
Woodman's House Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1820, with later additions, built for the Downe's Sessay Estate. It is constructed of mottled pinkish-brown brick in Flemish bond and features a graduated slate roof, with a Welsh slate roof on the wing. The building is L-shaped, consisting of two storeys and two bays, with an added wing to the rear left and a 20th-century single-storey addition in the angle, which is not of special interest.
The garden front has a central four-panel door with a wood architrave and a deep stone lintel that features an incised border and well-cut lettering stating: 'THE WOODMAN'S HOUSE/1820'. There are four-pane sash windows in wood frames, each with projecting stone sills and segmental brick arches. The roof is hipped with a central stack. The inscription on the door lintel suggests that the house was built to accommodate one of the estate workers.
