Description
The barn at Thormanby Mill is an early 19th-century structure built of red brick in an irregular English garden wall bond, topped with a pantile roof. It features five bays, with a central cart entry that projects under the main roof. This entry is flanked by three tiers of chamfered slit vents, which are currently blocked. The building has tabled and dentilled eaves, shaped stone kneelers, and ashlar coping.
On the rear side, there is a blocked lower cart entry with a timber lintel. To the right, there are three tiers of vents similar to those on the front, while to the left, there is a blocked doorway with a timber lintel, a small low-level arched opening, and another small lower opening. The right return has a tier of vents at low level, matching those on the front. The left return features square vents arranged in a diamond pattern, with two above one, and is interrupted by a later blocked loading door and triangular-set vents in the gable.
Inside, the barn has four principal rafter roof trusses, along with a small-scantling wall plate and rafters.
