Description
The cartshed with granary over at Beningbrough Hall dates from the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond and features a Westmorland slate roof. The building is two storeys high and consists of four bays, which are defined by corniced pilasters that are paired at the ends and in the center.
On the ground floor, there are three segmental header-brick arches over cart doors, with similar arches over two windows on the right. Between the central pilasters, there is a board door with an overlight. The first floor has a board door in the second bay, while the other bays contain sash windows with glazing bars set under flat brick arches. The eaves cornice is stepped and dentilled, and there is ashlar coping along the top. This architectural style continues on the left and right returns, with the gables designed as pediments.
Inside, there are central stone steps leading up to a large room on the first floor, which features a swivel hoist next to the taking-in door. The cartshed is adjacent to a covered yard from the same period and is part of an interesting complex of home farm buildings.
