Description

STANWICK ST JOHN STANWICK NZ 11 SE 3/186 Well approximately 100 metres north-east-east of Church of St John the Baptist

GV II

Well. Mid - late C19. For the Duke of Northumberland. Possibly by Anthony Salvin (restorer of Church, qv). Rubble, stone slate roof. Small single- storey cell, square in plan, with pointed-arched opening with continuous hollow-and-roll moulding to front. Stepped diagonal buttresses at all corners. Moulded gable coping with finial. In rear wall, lancet-shaped vent. Inside, low string course around walls; 6-sided basin set on the ground, with 2 iron bars across on which to set vessels, above which iron pipe in rear wall discharges water into basin. Fed from well in field (qv).
