Description
The George Inn is a mid-18th century building, with evidence of its date found in the internal features. The staircase has acanthus-moulded ends to the treads, slender vase-shaped balusters, and clustered Gothic newels. There is a bolection-moulded chimney piece made of Hopton Wood marble on the ground floor.
The exterior dates from the early 19th century and is finished in stucco with a pitched slate roof. The building stands three storeys tall and features a modillioned wooden eaves cornice. It has eleven bays of sash windows with moulded stucco architraves. The two end bays are only two storeys high, while the next three form a canted bay. There is a porch supported by Tuscan columns and pilasters, topped with a pediment. The entrance door has a fanlight and glazing bars, and there is a carriage entrance.
