Description

This is an early to mid-19th century row of shops and houses located on Bar Street. The buildings are three storeys high and constructed of red brick, with the ground floor of number 44 stuccoed. They have a frieze, moulded eaves bed, a low-pitched gable-ended slate roof, and two windows on each of the upper floors. The windows are recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars and block sills, set within flat, gauged arches. Numbers 36 to 42 have a continuous group of shop fronts with Tuscan pilaster frames, frieze and moulded cornices. Most of the shop windows and entrances have been altered, but number 36 retains a window of eight large panes with panelled risers, flanked by a shop and a house door. The house door is of four panels with a rectangular fanlight. The ground floor of number 44 has a sash window similar to those on the upper floors, an altered door, and marginal glazing to the fanlight. Numbers 36 to 44 form a cohesive group.
