Description
The Grammar School dates to 1760 and was built for Rev John Noble. It is a brick building with a pantile roof, constructed on a double-depth plan with five bays and two storeys. The bays on the first floor are divided by brick pilasters which rise into a parapet. A three-panel door is set within a rubbed-brick architrave on the ground floor of the first bay, with a twelve-pane overlight. The ground-floor windows are round-arched sash windows within brick header arches featuring projecting brick keystones. First-floor windows are round-arched sashes with brick stretcher surrounds and shaped brick aprons. A coat of arms is set within a keyed oculus in a sandstone pediment above the central bay, with flanking half-bays. The roof is hipped, with arcaded and corniced end stacks. A central clock tower has double quoin strips of chamfered rustication supported by scrolls. Above that is a wooden, octagonal cupola with a lead-covered roof and a weathervane. The school was built by the first master, who funded the construction himself.
