Description

The Parish Church of St Mary in Whitby dates back to around 1110, with the transepts and tower added in the 12th and 13th centuries. The roof pitch was altered in 1614, the north wall was removed in 1818, and a porch was added in 1823. The interior is notable for being an unaltered example of a large town church, retaining its fittings from before the 19th century. These include galleries dating from 1695 to 1818, box pews, and a three-decker pulpit from 1778, which was altered in 1847 and equipped with speaking tubes in 1843.
