Description
Nos 57 and 59 High Street is a house that has been converted into two shops. It dates from the mid to late 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone and has a Westmorland slate roof. It stands three storeys high and has two bays.
No 57, on the left, features an entry to a passage on the left side leading to the rear, a central plate-glass shop window, and a glazed shop door on the right. The fascia board has dentilled decoration and is flanked by consoles carved with leaves and grapes. No 59, on the right, has a 20th-century glazed shop door and a plate-glass window. The fascia from the 19th century is likely encased in a 20th-century shop sign.
On the first floor, both shops have two canted bay windows with four-light sashes and dentilled cornices. The second floor has, from left to right, a small square inserted window, a four-pane sash, a blind 16-light window with painted glazing bars, and a 12-pane unequally hung sash in a flush frame, all with projecting sills and wedge lintels. The top floor features a large four-pane sash in a gabled dormer on the left, and two small four-light segmental-headed windows with flush frames and projecting sills, with the left window being blind and having painted glazing bars. There is a decorated lead downpipe and rainwater head to the right, and rendered end stacks. The building is included for its group value.
