Description
The Edwardian Shelter, located 15 metres west of the Cliff Lift in Whitby, dates from around 1900 and was restored in the late 20th century. It is constructed of wood and cast iron, featuring a hipped roof covered with wooden shingles. The structure is supported by six turned wooden columns, each adorned with ornate iron brackets and topped with iron rosette finials. These columns hold up a wooden panelled ceiling and the hipped roof. At the base of each column, there are similar curved cast iron brackets, and the wooden framed structure includes lower plank divisions and curved slatted benches in between. The ends of the shelter have ornate cast iron brackets that support simple projecting plank benches. This shelter is one of a pair of identical structures located on the north cliff at Whitby.
