Description
The Art Nouveau shelter, located 30 metres west of the Cliff Lift in Whitby, was built around 1914 and restored in the late 20th century. It is constructed of wood and features a plain tiled hipped roof. The structure is supported by 17 square timber posts that hold up a shallow pitched hipped roof with deeply overhanging eaves. The posts are arranged in five bays by two, with central entrances on both long sides that lead to inner seating areas equipped with bench seats supported by plain curved brackets. The short ends have entrances to the right, leading to small seating areas with similar benches. At either end, plain balustrades are decorated with cut-out Art Nouveau tear drop motifs, and there are plank benches across the front, also supported by plain curved brackets. Curved beams and supporting braces are held up by columns, and these features are adorned with additional Art Nouveau relief panels.
