Description
Myton Bridge is an iron bridge built in 1868 and restored in 2002, located in Myton on Swale. It features a single span with a shallow triple arch design made of cast iron and red brick, complemented by ashlar dressings. The bridge has open work spandrels with circular panels that are filled with shields showcasing a lion relief. The surface slightly projects and is supported by iron cross girders, with an octagonal patterned iron balustrade and an iron handrail. The abutments are constructed of brick and have projecting corner piers; the river-side piers include chamfered ashlar plinths, a bracketed cornice, and pyramidical caps. Behind the bridge are brick parapet walls topped with ashlar coping that is carved on simpler ashlar brackets. The end piers are shorter and also feature chamfered plinths and pyramidal caps.
The bridge was built for Major H.M. Staplyton, the Lord of the Manor, and includes infill panels above the ribs that display a replica of the Stapylton family coat of arms.
