Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building located in Myton-on-Swale. It dates back to the 13th century, with alterations from the 15th century and restorations and additions from the 19th century, including the west tower, which was added inside the nave in 1887, the roof structure, and the south porch. The church is constructed of sandstone and features a green tile roof with bands of red tiles.
The layout includes a 2-bay aisleless chancel, a 3-bay nave with a north aisle, a west tower, and a south porch. On the north wall of the chancel, there is an early 13th-century lancet window, along with two blocked lancets on the south wall that have angle shafts and bell capitals, likely from the later 13th century. The east window is a 3-light design with glass by Kempe from 1888, and there are two 15th-century flat-arched windows with trefoil-headed lights on the south wall, all of which have been restored.
The nave features an arcade of cylindrical piers with alternating round and octagonal capitals, and double-chamfered 2-centred arches with cusped quatrefoils in the spandrels. The 15th-century flat-arched windows with trefoil-headed lights have also been restored. The west tower is battlemented and consists of three stages.
