Description

Nutwith Cote is a farmhouse dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and features a graduated stone slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan, with the main front dating to the early 18th century and the rear wings to the early 17th century.

The main front is two storeys high with a cellar and consists of four bays. The central entrance features a half-glazed door framed by a stone architrave, a pulvinated frieze, and a pediment, above which is a sundial. The two bays to the right have cellar openings with chamfered surrounds. All windows on both the ground and first floors are four-pane sashes with plain stone surrounds and moulded sills. The façade includes a moulded stone cornice and a coped parapet, with a stone coping and an end stack to the right, along with a brick ridge stack.

To the right is a lower 17th-century wing that has two windows, one with a chamfered surround and the other above it with a moulded architrave. The gable on the right features shaped kneelers, stone coping, and an end stack.

Inside, one room contains a doorway and a niche with open segmental pediments, while another features fluted Ionic pilasters, plaster friezes, and a cornice. The doors are panelled oak with original brass hinges and fittings, and the floors are made of willow pattern stone. A late 17th-century staircase showcases bulb-and-umbrella balusters. Originally, Nutwith Cote served as a grange for Fountains Abbey.
