Description

This is a late 16th or 17th century farm outbuilding, with earlier timbering and 19th-century alterations, situated approximately 20 metres south-east of Cundall Hall Farmhouse. The building is constructed of red/brown brick in random and English bonds and has a pantile roof. It is two storeys high and six bays wide. A large sliding door is located to the right of the centre, and a board stable door is on the left. The ground floor has three four-pane, bottom-hinged windows to the left and centre, and a single-light, recessed chamfered brick-mullioned window to the right. The first floor has a loading door on the left, flanked by eight-pane, side-sliding sash windows; a blocked doorway and two or three-light recessed chamfered brick-mullioned windows are on the right. The roof is hipped. A 20th-century outbuilding projects forward from the right end and is not of special interest. The upper floor is supported by massive chamfered cross-beams. The north end of the building contains a roof supported by three massive arch-braced collar-beam trusses, with up to eight pegs to each joint, and are marked I, II, and III, from south to north, on the north, north and south faces. Trusses II and III are closely spaced, approximately 1 metre apart. The remaining four trusses are composed of massive cambered tie-beams carrying queen posts to large principal rafters. The third truss from the left (south) end is marked IIII on its north side. The building is contemporary with Cundall Hall Farmhouse, and is an uncommon early survival in the area.
