Description
The Old Hearse House, now used as a garage, is located on the north side of The Parsonage in Knaresborough. This structure dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is built of coursed squared limestone and features a stone slate roof. The building is rectangular and single-storey, with 20th-century board double doors at the east end and a small Gothick-style window on the west side, which has no glazing. The roof is hipped.
Attached to the southeast corner is a wrought iron railing that is approximately 80 centimetres wide and 1.5 metres high. The railing has a stone sill and features rails with spearhead finials and a ramped top edge. It includes two panels adorned with scrolls and roundels at the lock rail and top rail height. Additionally, there is a gritstone gate pier that stands about 2 metres high, with a rounded top. This pier is split, possibly broken, approximately 50 centimetres above ground level. The pier and railing likely represent the remains of a gateway that once closed the end of Vicarage Lane from the churchyard.
