Description

Eastgate House is a house dating from the mid-to-late 18th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of coursed sandstone to the front and right, coursed limestone to the rear and left, and has a pantile roof with rebuilt brick stacks. The house follows a central stairhall plan, being one and a half rooms deep. The front facade is three storeys high with a three-window arrangement. A central four-panel door, with an overlight, is set beneath a bracketed cornice. The ground and first floors feature four-pane sash windows with plain lintels, while the second floor has twelve-pane sashes with wedge lintels. All windows have stone sills. The rear of the house features a round-headed staircase window with an archivolt of gauged brick. The stacks pierce a hipped roof. Inside, a geometrical open-string staircase has turned balusters, shaped cheekpieces, and a moulded, wreathed handrail.
