RIPLEY MARKET PLACE (south side, off) Gravestone approximately 15 metres west of the Church of All Saints

GV II

Gravestone. Dated 1746. For Thomas Chippendale. Gritstone. An upright slab approximately 80 centimetres high with finely-tooled egg and dart moulding to the edges and triangular pediment which has a winged head to the apex. The lettering is finely cut but weathered: "Near this Place Lies in - / terr'd the Body of Tho / Chippendale of Ripley / (who) died Sept 2(?5) 1746 / In the 6(?3) year of his Age". The Chippendale family lived in Ripley for many years, a Thomas Chippendale was a craftsman on the estate in 1735-6 and his father was an estate joiner. In 1752 William Chippendale made a detailed survey of Ripley village. This family is thought, to have been linked with Thomas Chippendale the cabinet maker (1718-79). It is on the opposite side of the path from those of Ralph Sauby and Ralph Robinson (qv). Ripley Castle Guide Book, p 8.
