Description
The Whitby Engine Shed and Engine Stable Cottage is a former engine shed, later used as a boat building shed, built in 1847 and extended in 1868 for the Whitby and Pickering Railway Company. The structure is made of ashlar stone with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with overhanging eaves, a continuous raised ventilator, and a single gable stack. The south front has two large round-headed engine openings with flush ashlar surrounds; the left opening has double plank doors, while the right is now filled with breeze blocks. To the left, there is a small, low office wing with a single door and window, both featuring segment heads, and a shallow pitched hipped roof with overhanging eaves. The east front originally had eight windows with 10 x 12 pane glazing bar segment-headed windows, but a right extension with seven windows now has taller 12 x 18 pane glazing bar segment-headed windows, as the final bay was demolished after bomb damage. The rebuilt brick north front includes two circular ventilation openings. Inside, the original section has a scissor truss roof, while the later extension features a queen post truss roof.
