WHITBY Waterstead Lane Whitby Engine Shed and Engine Stable Cottage

(Formerly listed as The Former Engine Shed, off ESK TERRACE (east side))

II Former engine shed, later a boat building shed. Built 1847 extended 1868 for the Whitby and Pickering Railway Company. Ashlar with ashlar dressings. Slate roofs with overhanging eaves, continuous raised ventilator and single gable stack. Ashlar plinth and quoins. South front has two large round headed engine openings, with flush ashlar surrounds. That to the left with double plank doors, and that to the right now filled with brieze blocks. To the left a small, low office wing with a single door and window, both with segment heads, and a shallow pitched hipped roof with over hanging eaves. East front, eight window original range, with 10 x 12 pane glazing bar segment headed windows. Beyond to right seven window extension, with 12 x 18 pane taller glazing bar segment headed windows. Originally the extension was eight windows long, but the final bay was demolished after bomb damage. Rebuilt brick north front has two circular ventilation openings.

Interior: scissor truss roof to original section, and queen post truss roof to later extension.
