Description
The fountain and wall, located approximately five metres to the north-east of the east porch of Hartforth Hall, were likely built around 1900 for Major Sheldon Cradock. Constructed from ashlar sandstone, the fountain features a U-shaped plan of steps with a turned balustrade that has chamfered terminals at the upper level. Between the lower flights of steps, there is an ashlar wall with a shell niche, which has a pilastered architrave and contains a male mask that discharges water into a circular basin, flanked by plain pilasters. Behind this, a coursed sandstone wall with a chamfered parapet includes a central flight of steps that provides access to a terrace where an orangery once stood. The fountain and wall are included for their group value.
