Description
Cattal Bridge, built around 1800, carries Tadcaster Road over the River Nidd. The bridge is constructed of ashlar stone and features three round arches with chamfered moulding. There are triangular cut-waters against the two central piers, which extend upwards to create pedestrian retreats at road level. The bridge has flat parapet coping, and the north arch has undergone extensive repairs. Cattal is located at a historic crossing point of the River Nidd, which was part of the Roman route between Aldborough and Tadcaster. The current structure is believed to have been built when the river was embanked.
