Description
The gateway adjacent to Wath Lodge is a Grade II* listed structure dating from the mid to late 18th century. It features wrought iron and wood gates, with ashlar stone piers. The design includes a double gate flanked by narrower pedestrian gates, all set within pedimented, flat-arched surrounds. The rusticated ashlar piers are adorned with pilasters that feature an egg and dart motif on the echinus, supporting an entablature. Above, a triangular pediment has deep eaves and displays a coat of arms with the motto "Reason contents me" in the tympanum. The left pedestrian gate is wooden, with its original lower half designed in a Chinese style and later bars above. The right pedestrian gate is a copy of the original. The central double gates are made of wrought iron, featuring arrow-headed standards, circles and scrolls in the lower half, rosettes in the lock rail frames, and scrolls and fleur-de-lis in the upper half.
