Description

This chest tomb, located approximately 5 metres south of the south door of the Church of St Mary, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed from sandstone slabs and features end panels with recessed sides and a flat top. The corner piers are designed as reeded square-section columns topped with rosettes. The end panels are decorated with an urn and drapery in relief. On the north side, the recessed panels display a weathered inscription that reads: 'John J'Anson / of Melmerby / ... the 16th day of March, 1813 Aged 38 years ...'.
