Description
The Old School, located south of the Crathorne Reading Room, dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century and has been altered over time. It features a rubble stone base with narrow brickwork that has been extensively patched and modified. The building has a brick stepped and dentilled eaves cornice, with tumbled-in brickwork at the gable ends.
The structure consists of three bays, with one and a half storeys on either side and a two-storey centre that was originally gabled but has since been raised. There are later openings added to the building. The rear elevation includes a round arched entrance, which may not be the original feature, and there are traces of a pointed arched window in the west gable end.
The building resembles an old chapel and may have originally served as a Roman Catholic place of worship.
