Description
The gate piers, railings, and pair of lodge houses at Ribston Lodge date from the mid to late 18th century and are possibly designed by John Carr. The pair of lodges are linked by wrought-iron railings to the gate piers. Each lodge is a single bay and square in plan, featuring inward-facing entrances with rusticated quoins at the impost level on the west facade. The entrances have central panelled doors set within an architrave that includes an entablature and cornice, flanked by relief wreaths above. The lodges also have a moulded eaves cornice and a central corniced chimney stack.
On the west facade, each lodge features a central round-headed window with glazing bars, set in a round-arched recess that has a moulded arch and a band at the impost level, with rusticated jambs acting as quoins below. The gable ends are topped with a moulded cornice and a pediment. The railings connecting the lodges to the gate piers are approximately 2 metres high, ramping up to the piers and adorned with arrow-head finials on the bars and dogbars, as well as pendants on the upper and lower rails.
The gate piers are made of rusticated ashlar up to the cornice level, featuring plain entablatures with relief wreaths and shallow triangular pedimented copings topped with heraldic crests. The right-hand pier was restored around 1985. This group of structures is similar to the Walshford Lodge at Ribston Hall. They were formerly listed under Great Ribston with Walshford parish.
