Description

Cob Castle is a former house, now divided into two cottages, dated 1663. The building is constructed of slobbered rubble with stone dressings and has a slate roof. The gable end facing the street features a porch added in 1985. The right-hand side of the building is two storeys high with four bays. The central entrance has a plain lintel and a four-panel door. To the left of this entrance is the original doorway, which has a chamfered surround and a Craven style lintel with the date and initials RAM; this entrance is now blocked and has a 20th-century fixed light. The ground floor windows on the left and right sides have 20th-century casements. On the upper floor, there is a similar window to the left and a smaller window to the right. The two extreme right-hand windows on the upper floor have chamfered surrounds and basket arched heads, both fitted with 20th-century casements. The rear gable end features a two-light double chamfered mullioned window with 20th-century casements on the ground floor. The left-hand side has a single-light window with a chamfered surround on the ground floor. To the right is a former five-light double chamfered mullioned window on the ground floor, now reduced to three lights as two outer mullions are missing; there are also two similar windows on the upper floor, with the left-hand window having three lights and the right-hand window formerly having four lights but now with the left-hand light blocked; all these windows have 20th-century casements or fixed lights. Inside, there is a small fireplace on the ground floor with a segmental stone head supported by corbels in the rear gable wall.
