Description
This group of four tombstones, dating from the 18th century, is located approximately two metres east of the porch of the Church of St John Baptist in Stanwick. The tombstones are made of ashlar sandstone and are arranged in a row.
From left to right, the first is a short slab with a scrolled top, featuring paterae in the apex volutes and a moulded frame around the inscription commemorating Robert Sewell, who died in 1719. The second slab also has a scrolled top with paterae on the apex volutes and a moulding to the scroll, commemorating Ann Sewell of "High-close," who died in 1761. The third slab has a bow-shaped top with moulded foliage and a worn inscription commemorating Jane, the wife of Rich'd Wh---. The fourth slab is designed as an aedicule, with an hour-glass and skull and cross-bones depicted in lozenge-shaped frames in the tympanum, along with a frame for a worn inscription commemorating Richard Sewell, likely from the later 18th century.
