Description
Saltcotes Farm is a farmhouse dating from 1679, marked by initials and a date on the door lintel, believed to refer to Thomas T MR and Mary R Saul. The building features a raised roof, with early 19th-century extensions added to the rear and right, along with later alterations. It is constructed with roughcast render over rubble, stone dressings, and has a graduated greenslate roof with a stone ridge. The farmhouse stands three storeys tall, with a two-storey extension set back to the right, and has three windows.
The central gabled stone porch is two storeys high and includes a six-panelled early 19th-century door, with the top panels glazed, set in a cavetto-moulded stone surround. The lintel features a central initialled panel with a moulded base, flanked by ogee-headed indentations that display the date. To the left of the porch is a four-light window, while to the right are a five-light window and a fire window. A continuous first-floor string runs with the porch, and there are four-light windows with hoodmoulds and labels on either side of the porch on the first floor, along with three three-light windows above. All windows have chamfered stone surrounds and mullions, although some have been replaced. The main house has two end chimneys, and there is one on the extension to the right.
The interior has undergone significant alterations but still retains two 17th-century carved oak fireplace surrounds. One features initials and the date RIBI, decorated with guilloche moulding, leaf and scroll patterns, rams' heads, and stars of David from 1664. The other, dated 1668, has a motif of interlaced arcading and has been repositioned and extended. The rear extension includes a well-crafted early 19th-century staircase, along with panelled doors and architraves featuring paterae.
