Description
The main building at Appleby Grammar School was built in 1887 and is two storeys high, constructed from grey and red stone with a slate roof featuring red tile cresting. A doorway dated 1671 has been reused from the original grammar school building and features Jacobean strapwork ornament, square pilasters on high plinths, a moulded and shaped doorhead, a studded door, and a moulded inscribed plaque above with a pediment. The Victorian section includes a square porch with a segmental arch, three windows to the left, two to the right, and six above, all with chamfered stone mullions and transoms. To the left is a two-storeyed former master's house with sash and stone mullioned windows. To the right is a chapel wing, which features a four-light Perpendicular style window in the gable.
