Description
The former north-east wing of Rayson Hall is a building originally constructed in 1606, likely incorporating earlier materials. It was built for Hugh Rayson, who served as the rector of Ousby Church from 1583 to 1611. The structure has been extensively reconstructed in the late 20th century. It features coursed rubble with quoins and a graduated slate roof, which includes stone end chimneys and coping at the north end. The building is two storeys high and has a part-glazed door set in a convex-moulded surround, topped with a hoodmould that has decorative labels. To the left of the door, there is a window with its mullions removed, also under a hoodmould with decorative labels. A blocked fire window on the ground floor to the extreme right has a chip-carved lintel. At the rear, original single and two-light mullioned windows remain, and a central gabled stair wing was added in the late 17th century. As of 1983, the house was being extended into a former outbuilding at the east end. Internally, 20th-century subdivisions have been added, and little of the earlier work remains, except for the closed string staircase, which features turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and square newels.
