Description
Abbot Hall is a 17th-century yeoman's house that has been altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is two storeys high and features a pebbledashed exterior with a slate roof. It has three chimneys, all of which were rebuilt in the 19th century. A gabled porch extends through both storeys at the far right, supported by widely spaced stone brackets beneath the guttering. The windows are mullioned and come in two and three light configurations, with chamfered and rebated details. The windows in the porch and on the ground floor to the right have individual hoodmoulds, while those on the left side of both floors feature continuous labels or strings. The doorway in the porch has a round head and label, dating from the 19th century, and is fitted with a plank door. There is also a doorway on the left side with a plain stone surround and a six-panel door. The rear of the building is plain, constructed of rubble, likely from the 18th or 19th century.
Inside, the ground floor to the right contains a large fireplace with a rough segmental head and an elaborate court cupboard, which features panels and a hood with pendants carved with "IKD 1632." The entrance hall has a muntin-and-plank partition and a corbelled 18th-century chimneypiece. The staircase at the rear is from the late 17th century and has a complex dogleg form with two branches at the first landing. It features a closed string, square newels with turned finials, and turned balusters. The left wall of the staircase is lined with 17th-century panelling, which also forms one wall of the first-floor parlour. The other walls of the parlour are adorned with early 18th-century panelling, complete with a cornice and dado. At the rear right, there is a stone spiral stair. On the first floor, the front room to the right contains some 17th-century panelling and a fitted cupboard that is similarly panelled. The roof features a heavy tie beam. It is believed that the right part of the house is the older section and was originally thatched. Until recently, Abbot Hall functioned as a farmhouse.
