Description
High Head Chapel is a private chapel for High Head Castle that is now disused. It is dated and inscribed over the entrance with "CHRISTOPHER RICHMOND ESQ, EDWARD HASELL ESQ, ANNO DOMINI 1682" and has 18th-century alterations. The chapel features red sandstone rubble walls that are partly covered with cement render. It has a graduated greenslate roof with an east cross finial and a west open bellcote. The structure consists of a 5-bay nave and chancel.
There is a south-west 18th-century segmental-arched doorway and pointed-arched window openings, all with red sandstone surrounds. One blocked 2-light stone-mullioned window is visible where the render has fallen away. A small 17th-century chamfered-surround opening is located on the west side. The north wall has one pointed-arched window and one 17th-century 2-light stone-mullioned window. The larger east pointed-arched window is situated under a 17th-century stone inscribed with the names of the churchwardens.
Inside, the chapel has a partitioned porch and boarded ceilings. There are panelled pews, although many have been partly removed, along with all other furnishings and fittings. At the time of the survey, the windows and doors had been removed, and the chapel was in a derelict condition.
