Description
The Church of St Cuthbert is a parish church dating from the 12th century, with significant restoration in the late 19th century. It is constructed from coursed, squared rubble with additional snecked rubble. The roofs are covered with graduated slate, featuring a lead roof over the aisle, stone copings, and kneelers. A bellcote with an iron gable-cross is located at the west end. The church originally had a two-cell plan, with a south aisle added and a gabled porch rebuilt in 1886.
On the north side of the chancel, there is a narrow slit window with a semicircular head that is likely original, while other windows are multi-light with variously foiled and cusped designs from the 19th century. The lead rainwater goods include dated rainwater heads from 1886 and decorative rosettes on the guttering. The south door, which dates back to the 12th century, has plain jambs and features small carved figures at either end of the shouldered lintel, with a blank tympanum decorated with chevrons on the voussoirs. Inside the porch, there are two fragmentary inscribed Roman stones and a part of a medieval grave slab built into the walls.
Internally, the church retains an original chamfered semicircular chancel arch, along with a late 19th-century octagonal arcade pier and responds. The late 12th-century font at the west end of the south aisle has an octagonal bowl, which may have been recut, with a moulded underside and a shaft decorated with zig-zag patterns, as well as a moulded necking leading to a chamfered base.
