Description
This building is a former private chapel, now functioning as a barn, located to the north-west of Blencow Hall Farmhouse. It likely dates from the late 16th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The structure features pink sandstone rubble walls topped with a graduated greenslate roof. It is a single-storey, single-bay building. The entrance is now through the open gable on the west side, and there are small side window openings along with a rebuilt two-light pointed-arched window on the east. Part of the north wall extends beyond the current west gable, indicating its original full extent, although it has been reduced in height. Historical references, such as W. Hutchinson's History of Cumberland from 1794, mention that the arms of Blencowe were cut in stone above the door, which was located in the now-demolished section, suggesting that this was part of the chapel's rebuilding in 1590. Engravings from 1794 and 1822 depict the chapel as complete but without a roof. The building is listed for its group value with Blencow Hall Farmhouse.
