Description
The Church of St Barnabas is an Anglican church built in 1870 by George Watson of Penrith. It is constructed from local ironstone rubble with Stanton sandstone dressings and has a slate roof. The nave and chancel share an uninterrupted roof, topped by a fleche above the chancel arch. There is a south porch and a vestry with a lean-to roof at the southeast. The church features single and paired flush lancets in the nave, and triple lancets at the west end. The chancel is polygonal and unbuttressed, with each facet displaying a single lancet under a hood mould, which is an impressive aspect of its design. The fleche has small gables at the cardinal points, and the vestry is accessed by a flight of steps from the west, featuring a two-light Caernarfon-type window.
Inside, the nave has a hammerbeam roof, and there is a vestigial chancel arch marked by a ceiling supported on shafts. The chancel has a collar rafter roof, and the furnishings are simple, including contemporary open benches. This church is a notable example of a thoughtfully designed Victorian rural church built on a low budget, showcasing careful material use and minimal detailing, such as the absence of buttressing and hood moulds. The battered polygonal apse stands out as a particularly impressive feature.
