Description

Warcop Hall, formerly known as Wharton Hall, is a large house with three main sections: the west wing from the late 16th century, the central block built in 1746 by Kelly, and an east addition from the late 19th century. The 16th-century wing is constructed of sandstone blocks and is rendered. The 1746 central block features ashlar stone with horizontal grooving, rusticated quoins, a moulded plinth, and an eaves cornice. The 19th-century addition is made of coursed, squared rubble with quoins on a chamfered plinth, and it has corbels that support an embattled parapet. All roofs are covered with graduated slate; the west wing has a stone end chimney with an embattled cornice, while the central block has stone copings, kneelers, and corniced chimneys.

The building is two storeys tall. The four-bay west wing, with its end bay projecting, has mainly 19th-century reconstructed two-light mullioned windows, along with an original mullioned and transomed window on the first floor. The six-bay central block features five circular steps leading up to a panelled door set in a pedimented architrave with Ionic pilasters. To the left of the door are two sash windows, and to the right are three sash windows, with five more above, all showcasing original wide glazing bars within the architrave. At each end, the rainwater heads display a heraldic device with the motto "FIDE ET AMORE." The single-bay 19th-century addition includes a three-light mullioned and transomed window, with a two-light mullioned window above it. There are extensive 19th-century additions at the rear, including the original Venetian stair window located at the back of the central block.
