Description

The works entrance lodge and gateway at Vickers Ship and Engineering Limited, known as Kings Gate, was built around 1913 for Vickers Ltd. It is now partly occupied by a bank. The structure is made of snecked red sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. It has two storeys and measures six by six bays, with a double depth. To the right, there is a lean-to gatehouse and double gates.

The building has a plinth and doorways at bays one and four, each featuring nine-panel doors with stone transoms and overlights. There are sill bands, lintel bands, and continuous dripmoulds above the rectangular windows, which now have later casements. On the first floor, the windows have sill bands and rock-faced lintels similar to those on the ground floor.

A cornice is topped with a balustrade divided into three sections, and the balustrade cornice returns as copings on the end gables. The roof is adorned with terracotta ridge tiles and two octagonal ridge vents with ogee cupolas, along with a corniced stack at the rear of the ridge, which has been heightened in brick.

To the right of the main building is the workers' entrance, which has a double-chamfered surround featuring a large keyblock and a balustrade above. The iron gates to the right have close bars beneath twin mid-rails, with scrollwork and arched rails above, as well as spear finials and scrolled stiles. This structure is included for its group value.
