Description

The Statue of Francis Aglionby is a Grade II listed monument made of Caen stone, situated on a high pedestal just outside the main entrance to the Carlisle Courts of Justice. This life-size statue depicts Major Aglionby in a standing pose, dressed as a country gentleman with an outer gown, likely symbolizing his judicial role, elegantly tied across his chest. In his right hand, he holds a copy of "Justice of the Peace and Parish Officer" (1755) by Richard Burns. The statue has suffered some damage, with parts of the fingers on the left hand and part of the left foot missing. The front face of the pedestal features a slate plaque inscribed with “Major Francis Aglionby MP 1777 – 1840 for many years Chairman of the Cumberland Quarter Sessions.”
