Description
High House is a farmhouse dated 1742, featuring an inscription of "Michael Smith" above the entrance. The building has undergone alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed of English garden wall bond brickwork set on a chamfered stone plinth, with V-jointed quoins. The roof is made of 19th-century Welsh slate and includes eaves modillions and brick chimney stacks from the same period.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has five bays with a double span. The entrance features a top-glazed four-panel door within a bolection moulded architrave, accompanied by an inscribed and dated frieze, all topped by a swan-neck pediment with a decorated tympanum. The windows are 20th-century single-pane sashes set in narrow painted stone architraves, while the stair window above the entrance is larger and has a 19th-century coloured-glass sash.
The brickwork on the front and sides changes above the ground floor, indicating that the upper storey was likely rebuilt in the 19th century, although it retains the original window surrounds and quoins. The outbuildings associated with High House are not of interest.
