Description

The Church of St Bride is a parish church located in Kirkbride, dating back to the 12th century with restorations in the 19th century. It is constructed from large blocks of red sandstone, believed to be of Roman origin, featuring flush quoins. The nave has a roof made of graduated sandstone slates, while the chancel, vestry, and porch are covered with greenslate roofs. The church has a three-bay nave with an open bellcote at the west end and a south porch, along with a lower single-bay chancel that includes a south vestry.

The nave features a round-headed south entrance, which is accompanied by a 19th-century timber-framed porch. There are tall 19th-century cusped-headed windows, with the left window consisting of two lights. The north wall has a narrow blocked entrance beneath a flat lintel, along with one original narrow round-headed window and a similar window in the chancel. The east window is a 19th-century intersecting design.

Inside, there is an unmoulded chancel arch resting on plain imposts. The font is square-bowled, adorned with knobbly leaf decoration around the underside and trefoil and quatrefoil panel decorations on each side. A small square stoup in the chancel has rounded corners and features carved lamb and cross decoration. An inscription above the south entrance, now a door into the vestry, reads "E(cclesia) Bride." The church contains 19th and early 20th-century stained glass, with the east window created by Kayll & Co of Leeds in 1904. Photographs in the vestry document the extensive restoration that took place between 1895 and 1898, during which most of the chancel was dismantled and rebuilt.
