Description
St John's Roman Catholic Church is a Grade I listed building located on Bridge Street. It was originally the chapel of the medieval Hospital of Saint John, which was founded around 1138. The church primarily dates from the 15th and 16th centuries, with an early 14th-century east window. It has a rectangular plan and features coursed rubble walls, with the west wall from the 15th century showcasing a large traceried window, and a late 16th or early 17th-century window on the north side. The south wall was rebuilt around 1853-1854 and includes a pair of 2-light windows of 14th-century style. The west doorway retains its original two-fold panelled doors, framed by a nearly semi-circular arch with a square label moulding that encloses quatrefoil spandrels. St John's Roman Catholic Church and its hall are recognized as a group.
