Description
St John's Hall is a Grade I listed building located on Bridge Street. It was formerly known as No 65 (St John's Hospital) and served as the infirmary of the Hospital of Saint John. The building functioned as an almshouse from the Reformation until 1870. It features a nearly rectangular plan constructed of ashlar and coursed rubble. The early 14th century west wall includes a doorway set in an arched tall panel beneath a round traceried window. The north wall dates from the 15th and 16th centuries, while the east and south walls were built in the 18th century. Inside, there is a symmetrical 17th century staircase. St John's Roman Catholic Church and the hall together form a group.
