Description
Kingsthorpe War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921 by Alfred Turner. It is made of Portland stone and features a resin statue.
The memorial consists of a four-stage, tapering stone pillar that stands on a two-stepped base, topped with a resin figure of St George. St George is depicted holding his sword, which appears as a cross, with a miniature crucifix of Christ in relief.
Originally, the inscriptions on the pillar were carved into the stone, but these were later covered with bronze sheeting that features raised inscriptions. The front of the memorial reads "LEST WE FORGET THESE MEN WERE FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH." The other sides display the names of the fallen. Additionally, there is a later metal plaque on the front face below the dedication that commemorates the repair work and reinstatement of the statue.
